Here is a short list of some of the most influential books on UX and leadership/management I have read and the web resources that I find myself repeatedly going back to. These have really helped me, and maybe they will help you, too.

Disclaimer: I am not affliated with any of these books, websites, or resources. I get nothing for endorsing these except the satisfaction of helping you out!

Books

Don't Make Me Think — by Steve Krug
An absolute must read for designers. Steve Krug does a masterful job of explaining user interface design and boils it down to these four key words — "don't make me think." Simply put, the more the user has to think about what they are trying to do, the less successful your design is. I loved this book so much, that when I finished it I read it again, but this time took notes to help reinforce his ideas.

Radical Candor — by Kim Scott
If you can only read one book on how to be an effective manager and leader, this is it! Kim Scott clearly explains how showing you care personally and challenging directly will open up fantastic communication in your team and helps everyone succeed. Then she backs it all up with plenty of guidance for real world situations. I wish I had read this years ago.

Multipliers — by Liz Wiseman
This is the second book you need to read about how to be an effective manager and leader. I have successfully used the principles in this book to mentor and lead those around me. Not only does it show how to multiply the talents and capabilities of your team, but it also shows what to watch for so you can reduce your tendencies as an unintentional diminisher.

Turn the Ship Around! — by L. David Marquet
What's the true purpose of a manager? To guide his or her team and help them reach their full potential as they accomplish their projects. "Leadership should mean giving control rather than taking control," David Marquet writes, "and creating leaders rather than forging followers." This book clearly shows the impact when you lay aside your own power as a manager and enable your direct reports to become an active part of the decision making!

You Should Test That! — by Chris Goward
Out of all the resources I studied and webinars I attended, Chris Goward's book by far was the best at explaining conversion rate optimization (CRO) and how to do A/B testing. It's very easy to read and full of examples and case studies. Above all else, his LIFT Model is a great reminder of the factors that impact conversion. It isn't just useful to CRO, but to overall usability!

Online Resources

Smashing Magazine — An absolutely fantastic resource of all things relating to users, user interfaces, usability, design, and even code. If you have one place to look at, this should be it. Not only do they have great articles, but in-depth studies, books, and even conferences to attend.

Twitter

Twitter — I got some advice once about Twitter that was absolutely golden — Use Twitter as a professional resource. What does that mean? Follow people who you respect in your field of expertise and don't clutter your twitter account with friends, relatives, celebrities, etc. That way, you can always find a great resource full of advice, studies, conferences, and articles. Spending a few minutes every day on your twitter feed will not only help you do your job better, but keep you abreast on current trends in your field and why you should do them (or why not). Click on the link above to see who I follow.

Training

LinkedIn Learning — Have you identified a specific skill or technology that you need help understanding? LinkedIn Learning offers a deep and expansive library of video training, ranging from hard skills like JavaScript, SQL, frameworks, and specific software packages (like Adobe and Axure) to soft skills like understanding and delivering good UX, leading a team, managing expectations, and improving communication.

User Interface Engineering (uie.com) — Looking for great online seminars on UI and UX topics? I don't think there is anything better than UIE.com. They offer a wide assortment of articles and videos by some great minds and presenters.
